Open-ended questions in PSLE Science account for 56% of the total score. Many students lose marks not because they don’t know the answer, but because they don’t express it properly.
Understanding Open-Ended Questions
PSLE Science Booklet B contains open-ended questions that require written responses. These test both content knowledge and scientific communication skills.
The Marking Scheme
Markers look for:
- Correct scientific concepts
- – Appropriate keywords
- – Clear logical flow
- – Complete answers
Common Types Of Open-Ended Questions
- Explanation Questions
- “Explain why…” or “Give a reason…”
- Structure: State the concept, then apply it to the situation.
2. Comparison Questions
“Compare…” or “What is the difference…”
Structure: State both sides, highlight differences clearly.
3. Prediction Questions
“Predict what will happen…”
Structure: Use “will” statements with reasoning.
4. Fair Test Questions
“How would you ensure a fair test…”
Structure: Identify variables, state what to keep constant.
5. Relationship Questions
“What is the relationship between…”
Structure: State the relationship clearly with direction.
Key Strategies For Full Marks
Use Scientific Keywords
Every question has expected keywords. Missing them costs marks even if the concept is correct.
Example: Instead of “the plant grows towards the light,” write “the plant shows positive phototropism, growing towards the light source.”
Answer In Complete Sentences
Avoid phrases or bullet points unless specified.
Use The Right Tense
Use future tense for predictions, present tense for general statements.
Include Cause And Effect
Most explanations need both. “Because” is your friend.
Answer All Parts
Many questions have multiple parts. Address each one clearly.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Vague Answers: “It will change” – what is “it” and how will it change?
Missing Keywords: Writing in everyday language instead of scientific terms.
Incomplete Comparisons: Stating one side only.
Irrelevant Information: Adding unnecessary details that don’t answer the question.
Practice Tips
Use Past Papers: Familiarise yourself with question types.
Mark Your Own Work: Compare with answer keys to see what markers expect.
