PSLE Science tests more than just facts – it assesses process skills. Understanding and practising these skills is essential for scoring well.
What Are Process Skills?
Process skills are the thinking and doing skills scientists use to investigate and understand the world. In PSLE Science, 14 process skills are tested.
The 14 PSLE Science Process Skills
- Observing
- Using senses to gather information.
Example: Noticing that ice melts faster on a hot day than a cold day.
2. Comparing
Identifying similarities and differences.
Example: Comparing the life cycles of a butterfly and a beetle.
3. Classifying
Grouping things based on characteristics.
Example: Sorting animals into vertebrates and invertebrates.
4. Measuring And Using Apparatus
Using tools correctly to measure quantities.
Example: Using a measuring cylinder to measure liquid volume.
5. Communicating
Sharing findings through writing, diagrams, or graphs.
Example: Drawing a bar chart to show plant growth.
6. Analysing
Examining data to find patterns or relationships.
Example: Identifying that more sunlight leads to faster plant growth.
7. Generating Possibilities
Coming up with ideas or explanations.
Example: Suggesting reasons why a plant isn’t growing well.
8. Evaluating
Assessing information, methods, or conclusions.
Example: Deciding if an experiment was fair.
9. Practising Scientific Concepts
Applying knowledge to new situations.
Example: Explaining why it’s cooler under a tree using evaporation concepts.
10. Making Inferences
Drawing conclusions from observations.
Example: Inferring that a circuit is broken because the bulb doesn’t light.
11. Formulating Hypotheses
Making testable predictions.
Example: Predicting that warmer water will dissolve sugar faster.
12. Predicting
Forecasting outcomes based on patterns.
Example: Predicting the next number in a pattern.
13. Fair Testing
Conducting controlled experiments.
Example: Testing plant growth with different light levels while keeping water and soil the same.
14. Problem-Solving
Applying knowledge and skills to solve problems.
Example: Designing a container to keep ice from melting.
How Process Skills Are Tested
In Multiple Choice:
- Identify correct observations
- – Choose appropriate apparatus
- – Select fair test conditions
In Open-Ended:
- Explain phenomena using scientific concepts
- – Design fair tests
- – Analyse data from tables and graphs
- – Make predictions with reasoning
Strategies For Each Skill
For Observing:
Look carefully. Use all relevant senses. Note details.
For Comparing:
Identify the criteria. State both sides. Highlight differences.
For Classifying:
Know the classification systems. Use keys correctly.
For Fair Testing:
Identify the variable to change. Keep everything else constant.
For Communicating:
Use clear language. Draw neat, labelled diagrams.
For Analysing:
Look for patterns. Identify relationships. Use data to support conclusions.
Practice Tips
Daily Observations:
Observe everyday phenomena and explain them scientifically.
Fair Test Questions:
Practise identifying variables. Know what to change and what to keep constant.
Data Analysis:
Practise reading tables, graphs, and charts. Draw conclusions from data.
Experiment Design:
Think through fair test scenarios. What would you change? What would you measure?
